Athlone Institute of Technology was established in 1970 and became an autonomous institution in 1993. It was designated an Institute of Technology in January 1998. The principal aim of the Institute is to provide education and training for the economic, technological, scientific, commercial, industrial, social and cultural development of the State, with particular reference to the Midlands. It has a full-time student enrolment of over 4,000, with an additional 2,000 students studying on a part-time basis.

The Institute consists of four schools: Business; Engineering; Humanities & Hospitality Studies and Science. It has developed outreach centres in Cavan and Carrick on Shannon, local links with Mullingar, Longford, Tullamore, Portarlington, Ballinasloe and international links have been developed with a large number of European colleges and universities. In accordance with its increasing student intake, the Institute has developed rapidly since its foundation. The main campus is situated approximately 1.5 miles from the town centre on the Dublin Road. The Institute also has a building at Northgate Street in the town centre, which houses the Department of Graphic Design.

The Institute currently offers an extensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes to students, which has been a factor in attracting industries to the town. AIT is an important contributor to the local economy and to the shaping of Athlone’s future.
